The mission of the SupportTheLittleGuy campaign and its e-zine is to gain exposure for the small press and its writers. That being said, I want you to consider strongly before submitting original works to us. The reason is, once a story is published (in any form) it then becomes a reprint and many more prestigious – paying – publications will not consider purchasing a reprinted story.
Reprints are preferred. However, submitting your work can be stressful to a new writer. You may not feel you’re talented enough to approach those larger markets and a 4theluv e-zine like SupportTheLittleGuy can lessen some of the pressure, giving you the validation you need to move onto bigger and better places. We’ve all been there. Your family thinks you’re good. Friends say you’re good. But for some reason, you just don’t think you’re that good.
This publication is built around support and there are times when you need to hear people who don’t know you say that your work is worth reading. My own first accepted piece was published by a 4theluv market and I’ve come back to it often, because it is more about people reading my work than making money from it for me and my confidence is not as high as it needs to be. Keep those things in mind when you submit your story. You’re not alone; others have and are in the same place as you.
What we want:
All genres accepted, but speculative fiction elements are preferred but even romance has a chance to get in so long as it isn’t a bunch of “Heaving busts” and “Pulsing manhoods”. Must be fiction. 1-2,000 words. I have a strong stomach, not everyone does and out of decency I ask that you refrain from submitting violence for the sake of violence or stories involving children in sexual situations. Swearing is fine, I don’t give a fuck if your characters swear, just make sure it’s appropriate. Unpublished authors are welcome to submit but see note above. Reprints are okay but NO simultaneous submissions please, same goes for multiple subs. Poetry is okay (poets are writers too, I didn’t forget) but limit poetry subs to 30 lines and no more than 3 poems per submission. After you receive a response with an acceptance or rejection feel free to submit again.
Standard format (Google Shunn manuscript format, if you’re unsure), e-mailed in either .doc or .rtf file as an attachment and please include the following information:
Twitter info (i.e. link and screen name)
Website (If you have one)
If you don’t have a Twitter account, I suggest you register for one as SupportTheLittleGuy is a Twitter based campaign and it makes it easier to promote you and your work if you have one. You can include a cover letter if you want, you don’t have to feel that you need to. I know how time-consuming cover letters can get. Cover letters can also be frustrating for a nervous unpublished author. So, it’s okay if you don’t want to include one.
Send your submission to firstname.lastname@example.org
Subject line should read: STLG Submission – Last Name
Well, right now it’s just little old me running things, which means it will take me between 30-60 days to get back to you. If you haven’t heard from me by then, please send a query.
Thank you and I look forward to reading your stories.
